May 2025 CEU: Tick-Borne Diseases and Mental Health: What Every Therapist Should Know
Lyme disease is the fastest-growing vector-borne disease in the United States, yet it remains widely misunderstood—especially in mental health settings. In this engaging and educational presentation, Lyme patient and advocate Sami Kirschbaum shares both personal experience and clinical insight to help therapists better understand the psychiatric and emotional impacts of tick-borne illnesses.
This session will explore the medical and emotional challenges clients with Lyme and related infections face—including misdiagnosis, stigma, and trauma from medical gaslighting. Participants will learn practical ways to offer validation, support, and informed care for these clients. Resources for further learning and collaboration with Lyme-literate providers will be shared.
By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
Identify common neuropsychiatric symptoms associated with tick-borne illnesses, including Lyme disease.
Understand how chronic illness and medical dismissal can contribute to trauma and psychological distress.
Recognize the role of mental health professionals in supporting clients with tick-borne disease.
Integrate trauma-informed care practices when working with clients experiencing chronic illness or suspected tick-borne infections.
